     Robert de La Salle came to New France in 1666. He set up fur trading posts along the St. Lawrence River banks.  He became curious about a great river so in the 1680's he traveled down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.  He claimed for France all of the land drained by the river.  The land was called Louisiana in honor of the king.
